A Meta Platforms (M1TA34), conglomerado de tecnologia dono do Facebook, Instagram e WhatsApp, anunciou nesta quarta-feira, 9, a decisão de demitir 13% de seus funcionários, em carta do CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Cerca de 11 mil “funcionários talentosos” serão demitidos, disse ele.

A Meta também decidiu cortar gastos discricionários e estender o congelamento de contratações ao longo de todo o primeiro trimestre de 2023, decisões que tornarão a empresa “mais eficiente”, de acordo com Zuckerberg.

O CEO ponderou que as decisões ocorrem após uma receita bem abaixo do que ele esperava no terceiro trimestre deste ano. No período, o lucro líquido da big tech caiu abaixo da metade em comparação com o mesmo trimestre do ano ado, enquanto a receita reduziu 4%.

“No início da pandemia de covid-19, o mundo mudou rapidamente para o online e o aumento do comércio eletrônico levou a um crescimento desproporcional da receita. Muitas pessoas previram que essa seria uma aceleração permanente que continuaria mesmo após o término da pandemia. Eu também, então tomei a decisão de aumentar significativamente nossos investimentos. Infelizmente, isso não aconteceu do jeito que eu esperava”, ite Zuckerberg.

As demissões e outras medidas de contenção de gastos agradaram investidores, e a ação da Meta subia 3,88% no pré-mercado das bolsas de Nova York, às 08h31 (de Brasília).
